THE EXTRAORDINARY event that is Christian Aid Week, which runs from Sunday, May 15, to Saturday, May 21, is currently being prepared for by the Montrose Christian Aid committee.
Arrangements are now well in hand for the house-to-house collection with the annual sponsored ramble taking place on May 15, leaving from the Old and St Andrew’s Church hall at 2pm. On Tuesday, May 17, the church of St Mary’s and St Peter’s will host a visit from the Hillside African Choir when there will also be an opportunity to view a current update of Christian Aid’s work world-wide.
On Saturday, May 21, volunteers will be at the new Montrose Co-op store for a final collection. People often ask where all the money collected will go. The answer is that funds raised during the week will help the vital work being done in communities throughout Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Latin America and the Caribbean.
One such community featured in Christian Aid Week 2011 resources is Los Alpes, in Nicaragua. Twelve years ago the coffee-farming community had no school and no health centre. Christian Aid, working with partners, is endeavouring to make that provision a reality along with seeking to work with the farmers to gain a fair price for their produce.
Further information about all of the Montrose events is available from local churches.
