FLOOD ‘events’ in the Montrose area, on October 12 and also in December, are on the agenda of Angus Council’s infrastructure services committee.

The director provided a list of incidents and action taken to remedy them.

The flooding on October 12 and the action taken were as follows.

A937 road, Grampian Growers area - Culvert full leading to overtopping and road flooding. Offlets were dug into fields by excavator. A scheme is in progress to improve drainage. This also involves the landowner carrying out additional drainage work across fields.

C38 road, Gallery House area - road closed, fields flooded. Offlets cut and drainage scheme being considered.

Ferryden, Usan - Burnside place flooded. Overspill from ditches on U477 above village. Road closed and subsequently cleaned. Farmer requested to address by leaving part of his land fallow.

A92, Rossie Braes and Bridgend Garage, limited problem. Drainage coped and farmer dug ditch in field near viaduct.

A934, Bonnyton Corners, road closed. Flooding from field cleared. Farmer diverted water elsewhere in field.

A934, Carcary Farm area, choked trap below old quarry. Hand cleared initially followed by jetting.

A937 road, St Cyrus, road closed due to flooding in Aberdeenshire – diversion via C37.

Western Road, closed. Western Road Old Printwork, choked gully cleared.

2 Bridge Street, footway gully choked. Gully cleared.

A92, Lunan School, closed. Choked ditch due to end of new road works – cleared.

A92, Northwater Bridge, closed. Choked gully at south end – gully cleared.

C39, Hillside, closed. Under railway bridge, flooding of road due to choked gully lids – gully cleared.

Incidents from December were listed as follows:

Ferryden, Burnside Place, West Terrace and Southesk Terrace, road closed due to flooding from fields. Water came down Craig Road and Old Craig Road/Terrace and into Burnside Place. Drainage was blocked due to debris washed down. Ditches have been cleared, widened where possible and drainage cleared.

Lunan School, flooding of property. The roads department is investigating further.

A934, Maryton, landslip. Rock has been placed pending further work. The roads department will carry out further stabilisation work.

Lunan Bay area. York cottage and Lunan Nursing Home expressed concerns about stream overtopping due to previous work. This is to be investigated.

The committee was also told that detailed discussions are taking place with a local supplier of flood defence products, SG Baker Ltd., Friockheim, to identify opportunities to adopt new materials in response to flooding.

A demonstration day was held on November 12 for senior officers and elected members of the council.
