A counterfeit note has been used in a clothes shop in Montrose today.

Police in the town received a report of a fake £50 note being passed in the M&Co store on the High Street.

The use of counterfeit £50 Irish bank notes at a number of shops in the town was also reported to the police in September.

A spokeswoman for Police Scotland said: “The last time this happened was earlier this year and it resulted in a spate of these notes being passed, with many businesses in Montrose and Brechin suffering financial loss.”

She urged businesses to check all notes and pay particular attention to £50 notes.

Anyone with concerns can contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
