Montrose couple Donald and Eileen Mowat celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary with family and friends at the weekend.

Dr. and Mrs Mowat, of Warrack Terrace, celebrated 60 years of marriage over lunch with loved ones at the Links Hotel on Saturday.

The couple met in 1949 at Aberdeen University, where Dr Mowat was studying medicine and Mrs Mowat was studying history.

They have three children together Donald, jnr, (58), Andrew (54), and Fiona (52), and have six grandchildren Alastair (29), Susanne (26), Siobhan (26), Catriona (24), Stuart (25) and Louisa (30), who gave birth on February 15 to Oscar, making Dr and Mrs Mowat great grandparents.

Dr Mowat (85) was a GP in Montrose from 1965 to 1989, a medical officer to Glaxochem for many years, as well as a session clerk to Montrose Old Church from 1970 to 2010 and is a former captain of Edzell Golf Club.

Mrs Mowat (85), nee Soutar, is the daughter of Hugh Soutar, formerly a solicitor in, and Provost of, Montrose.

She became a doctors wife first in the Royal Air Force at Leuchars, then Norfolk, then following Dr Mowat’s civilian career in Derbyshire and Angus, supporting his practice.

Their son Donald Jnr said: “To love and the secret of happiness, I think they might say that love is a gift of grace which grows with time and that the secrets of happiness include perseverance and an eye to virtue.

“But if pressed, dad says it was love at first sight when he saw mum in the Atheneum dining room in Aberdeen.”

The celebration on Saturday was blessed by the Rev. Dr Laurence AB Whitley, formerly of Montrose Old Church and now of Glasgow Cathedral, who had travelled with his wife Catherine to be with the Mowat’s family and friends.
