A man is to stand trial charged with rape after a “particularly distressing assault” on a young woman in an underpass.
A major investigation was launched after the alleged attack, which took place in an underpass in Robert Street, Arbroath, in the early hours of Sunday August 9.
The 21-year-old victim was said to have left Coast nightclub in the Angus town just after 2am before heading towards Morrisons supermarket car park nearby.
She was then allegedly attacked between 2.30am and 5am in the underpass in what police described as a “particularly distressing assault”.
Yesterday (Tuesday) Mihaita Ivan, 25, of Arbroath, appeared in private from custody at Forfar Sheriff Court charged in connection with the attack.
Ivan faced a single charge of rape during the brief private hearing.
He made no plea or declaration and was fully committed for trial.
Ivan was remanded in custody ahead of further dates being set.
