A COMPENSATION order of £2,500 was made against a Montrose man at Arbroath Sheriff Court last Tuesday.
John Shaw (25), St Christophers, Brechin Road, was also ordered to undertake 200 hours community service, reduced from the maximum 300 hours because he had pled guilty at the earliest possible opportunity.
The charge was that on May 23, at the Waterfront Night Club, Arbroath, he assaulted a male by punching him on the face to his severe injury and permanent disfigurement.
Sheriff Stein told Shaw that the offence as outlined by the Crown merited a prison sentence.
However, Shaw’s only previous conviction had been for a relatively minor traffic offence, and it turned out that his victim’s injuries were not as serious as they might have been. He had also read reports that had been compiled on Shaw which said that he had appreciated the seriousness of what he had done.
Under these circumstances, the option of community service and a large compensation order was appropriate.
