montrose is set to “shine” as part of the county’s celebrations for Her Majesty The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, according to organiser Robina Addison.
Mrs Addison, who is organising both the local contribution to the celebrations as well as the wider county celebration, this week said the town and district has responded well to appeals for groups to take part.
She said: “I’ve been very heartened by the response from Montrose, there has been lots of interest and enthusiasm.
“I think Montrose will shine. There’s a well-rounded representation of the town, from young to old including youth groups such as scouts and guides, theatre groups, dance groups and bands.”
The Glamis Gathering, which will be held at Glamis Castle on May 20, will be presided over by the county’s Lord Lieutenant, Georgiana Osborne, who has appointed Mrs Addison as one of her deputies to head its organisation.
A similar celebration at Glamis, childhood home of The Queen Mother, for the Golden Jubilee in 2002 attracted 15,000 spectators although attendance at this year’s event is expected to exceed that. Each burgh will showcase local talent and enterprise in individual marquees around the castle parkland with a programme of entertainment planned for a central stage.
Mrs Addison added: “So far it’s the biggest event in Scotland, from what we can gather, and it’s the biggest event that has ever been held at Glamis.”
