Proof that there can be smoke without fire was demonstrated at Montrose Academy on Monday, when the fire detection system was triggered in the technical department.
A drill generated some air borne material which then triggered the smoke detection system and the Fire Brigade attended.
The incident took place at lunch time and there was a full, rapid and successful evacuation.
The activation of the fire alarm is (until proven otherwise) a fire and so the Fire Brigade is called automatically.
The school is now looking at an extraction system in the wood cutting area to prevent a build-up of such material in the air.
