It was a family outing to the Strathmore Arms at Glamis recently - and it proved to be a visit to remember.
Quite frankly, I couldn’t fault it. The surroundings, the service and the superb food all combined to create a dining experience I cannot rate highly enough and which I hope to repeat in the not too distant future.
We made the short trip from Forfar to Glamis for a Sunday evening meal.
With three generations, finding a menu to suit can sometimes prove problematic - but not at the Strathmore Arms.
The menu selection was incredible, with everything from freshly prepared local game, traditional steak pie and haddock and chips, to spicy nachos and curries.
After much deliberation our party chose a variety of dishes from the main and specials menu - and each and every one was highly complimented.
Starters of nachos, salmon and prawn terrine and Japanese prawns with a sweet chilli sauce all set us up perfectly for what was to follow - but be warned, the portion sizes are huge!
Here we had a selection of the most delicious steak pie - melt-in the-mouth beef in a rich gravy topped with piping hot pastry - served with chips and a selection of broccoli, carrots and cauliflower. There were no complaints about the lasagne or the fish.
I chose the lightly spiced mango chicken served on a bed of rice, whilst the lamb dopiaza was also a firm favourite at our table.
The staff were attentive and incredibly helpful. Meals can be served in the main dining room, the bar or a smaller dining room where we were seated.
The quaint, historical inn in the centre of the village oozes character with antique furniture and ornaments dotted throughout.
Regular diners have obviously cottoned on to the size of the portions and quite a few were ordering half portions for the main courses - obviously to leave room for one of the mouth-watering dishes from the dessert menu.
As well as the main menu there was an impressive selection of daily specials - you are, quite simply, spoiled for choice. This was an outstanding meal, beautifully presented and served by friendly, helpful staff.
