Angus Arts is hosting another one of its hugely popular food and film evenings at The Glenesk Retreat this weekend.

The event is on Friday (April 24) and this time the film is ‘Waking Ned’ staring James Nesbit.

Angus Arts is well-known for the wide range of arts experiences it offers, bringing top quality theatre, music, films, puppetry, workshops and other events to a rural audience.

Sue Waddicor, administrator of Angus Arts, said: “We chose ‘Waking Ned’ partly because the audiences have requested it and partly because it’s exactly the kind of film we love to show people, it’s a great, feel-good film.

“Just as the charming British film The Full Monty told the story of simple men willing to shed their clothes for money, ‘Waking Ned’ is the story of older Irish men who pursue money and take off their clothes.

“It’s about two characters, Jackie O’Shea and Michael O’Sullivan, who on hearing that there’s a lottery winner in their small Irish village, set off to see if the winnings might be shared.

“Ned Devine is the lucky one, but when O’Shea and O’Sullivan pay him a visit they are in for a bit of a surprise.

“Jason Korsner of the BBC reviewed it saying that ‘The beauty of this film is its simplicity’.

“It’s good old-fashioned story-telling, following the increasingly desperate attempts of a group of lovable rogues to fill their pockets’. Who could resist that?

“It has a great cast, including Ian Bannen, David Kelly, Fionnula Flanagan and James Nesbit and the PG certificate means that it’s suitable for all the family.”

Angus Arts would like to thank NEAT Flicks, supported by Creative Scotland, for making this event possible.

The Retreat will be providing some tasty Colcannon and an Irish dessert to accompany the film.

This means people should book in advance to help indicate numbers for catering purposes. Please let the organisers known if you need a vegetarian meal.

The event takes place at 7 pm on Friday, April 24 at The Retreat in Glenesk.

Tickets cost £10 for both food and film and can be purchased from Angus Arts by ‘phoning 01561 298173 or 01356 648669, by emailing, online at or in person at The Retreat.
