Former Montrose Methodist Minister, the Rev David Thomson, has died at the age of 64, following a long illness.

Originally from South Africa, he trained for the ministry in the UK and was delighted when his first appointment in 1989 was in Montrose - where his grandfather had been born.

During his time in the town, he served on the local crime prevention panel and was also a governor at Lochside Primary School.

He moved to Sunderland in 1991 and, despite spending the rest of his ministry in the North-East of England, maintained strong connections with the town through his wife, Fiona, who is originally from Montrose.

David, who died at home in Blaydon on August 29, is survived by Fiona and sons, Jamie and Robbie.

His funeral will take place at Trinity Methodist Church, Blaydon, on Monday, September 12.
