With less than 100 days to go to the Commonwealth Games, 21 projects across Perth and Kinross, Angus, Dundee and Fife received grants.

The projects shared a total of £133,143 in grants between them from the National Lottery funded Celebrate programme.

The Links Park Community Trust in Montrose will use their grant of £2,400 to put on a summer sports programme, raising awareness of various sports and igniting an interest in the Commonwealth Games. Games events will be screened and participants can take part in flag, medal and T-shirt design.

Montrose Academy have been awarded almost £10,000 (£9,910) - the Academy will run an exciting programme of sporting activities leading up to a Junior Commonwealth Games event at the end of the academic year which will involve all pupils from primary four to S6.

The local sports clubs have agreed to run community sports sessions open to all young people in Montrose, including tennis, golf, athletics, rugby and many more.

The project will culminate in a Junior Commonwealth Games and all clubs will run competitions on the day with gold, silver and bronze medals.

Announcing the investment, the Big Lottery Fund Scotland Chair, Maureen McGinn said: “I am delighted to see the wide range of projects benefiting from today’s Celebrate funding.

“From community arts and dance activities to community baton relays and sports taster sessions, these projects will bring together people to enjoy a range of local community events.

“It is exciting to see so many groups across the country capture the spirit of the Commonwealth Games and I wish them all every success as they get set to celebrate in their own unique way.”
