An Angus entrepreneur and Scotland’s smallest gin producer has been named as drinks partner for the 2016 Senior Open at Carnoustie.
‘Gin Bothy’ artisan gin, handmade by Kim Cameron in small batches at Peel Farm, Kirriemiur will be served to golfers, VIPs and members of the public at a tournament that will see golfing legends Bernhard Langer, Miguel Angel Jiménez, Fred Couples, Colin Montgomerie and Tom Watson play the challenging championship links course.
The international event, part of the European Senior tour follows on from the 145th Open at Royal Troon and is expected to attract over 40,000 spectators to Carnoustie.
Often called the accidental gin maker, Kim Cameron took to making gin as a sideline to her jam making business. After entering her jam product into the World Jampionships in Perthshire in 2013, Cameron-Gall’s mum suggested adding the by-product of her mass jam-making - an excess of fruit juice - to gin. Soon, she discovered the gin, which she makes with the help of a 17th century Scottish recipe favoured by bothy dwellers was outselling her original product.
The award-winning gins are infused with soft fruits sourced from across Angus and Tayside and with botanicals and grain spirit from nearby Glamis and will be the exclusive gin brand served at sponsor hospitality bar, The Tassie VIP bar. Members of the public will be able to sample and purchase Gin Bothy from the ‘Taste of Angus’ exhibition at the Tented Village.
Gin Bothy founder Kim Cameron has hand batched hundreds of bottles for the event and is expecting to serve over 3000 gin and tonics across the 4 day sporting event including the new Gin Bothy Original gin, a savoury gin infused with Scottish pine needles, hawthorn root and rosemary.
Simon Harris, Commercial Manager, European Senior Tour said: “The Championship is always very supportive of local businesses and we are pleased to join forces with an innovative young company in Gin Bothy to provide a new and interesting experience for the spectators this week.”
Kim Cameron, founder of Gin Bothy said: “The opportunity to introduce Gin Bothy to thousands of visitors keen to experience the best of what Scotland has to offer from golf to gin is fantastic for a small brand like ours and we’re truly delighted to be working with the 2016 Senior Open Championship at Carnoustie.”
