A leading oil and gas recruitment expert has reported that 120,000 new oil industry staff will be required in the UK in the next 10 years.
Kevin Forbes, managing director of oilandgaspeople.com has commented following the results of the website’s annual survey of oil and gas companies.
The survey found that 44 percent of the current oil and gas workforce were over 45 years of age with many due to retire in the next five to 10 years.
The survey also found that under investment in staff over the last 10 years was the main factor identified by respondents for the current skills shortage affecting the industry.
Of the companies surveyed, 88 percent of them said they would be increasing their workforce in the next 12 months with many saying they would be happy to employ people from outside Aberdeen in the Montrose and Angus area.
A separate survey of recruiters and staffing firms carried out by the website also identified a desperate shortage of skilled workers. With such a limited pool of candidates 71 percent of recruiters said they had recruited staff via social media sites such as LinkedIn and Facebook.
Kevin Forbes said: “The oil and gas industry has always been very innovative so it comes as no surprise that so many recruiters turn to social media when looking for staff, Oil and Gas People is very heavily integrated with social media and our own social media networks are some of the largest online with direct reach to 1.5 million people in the industry.”
Oilandgaspeople.com was set up by people who work in the oil industry to offer a live snapshot of the current oil and gas workforce and its availability. Now the most popular oil and gas jobs site globally, the site is utilised by over 3,000 companies from around the globe to advertise positions and find available candidates. Industry professionals in the Montrose and Angus area should register and build a detailed profile to enable recruiters in Aberdeen to find them.
