A MONTROSE painting trainee has been highly placed in the prestigious Dulux Apprentice of the Year contest held.

Grant McIntosh, an apprentice with Montrose company Pert Bruce Decorators, and student at Angus College, was up against eager students from nine colleges, ranging from Inverness to Ayrshire, and was placed fourth overall.

As Angus College was fresh from holding a highly successful Scottish heat for the Skillbuild competition – in which Angus students were equally successful – confidence was high among the painting and decorating team in Arbroath’s Keptie Road, especially as the colleges painting and decorating students have lifted 63 medals since 1998.

Although the top accolade went to a girl from South Lanarkshire College, making her five-hour round trip worthwhile, Angus College apprentices were placed third and fourth.

Kirriemuir student Carol Benvie, who works for Enterprise Group, just pipped Grant to take third place.

The students were tested in a variety of skills, all demanding scrupulous attention to detail and scary levels of precision, from paperhanging in front of exacting judges to traditional brush skills and special decorative effects, under equal scrutiny.

In addition, some traditional finishes currently staging a bit of a comeback were featured, such as rag-rolling and stencilling.
