Carla’s fund-raiser for dystrophy sufferer

A MONTROSE venue will host a fund-raising event on Sunday, August 12, for an Arbroath man who is the victim of an incurable disease.

His cousin, Carla Beattie, who lives locally, explained that Daniel Mathieson, who is 22, was one of three brothers, all afflicted with the muscle wasting disease Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), and all of whom were confined to wheelchairs.

Daniel’s younger brothers have both passed away: James was 17 when he died and John was 21.

All three have been supported by the charity Action Duchenne.

Daniel has expressed a desire to visit Disneyland in Florida, while that is still possible.

This will be a costly exercise, and Carla, with her friend Jade Riddock, have arranged a sponsored wax-a-thon at the Golf Inn on August 12, starting at noon.

The idea is that anyone who wishes to give sponsorship can pay to have a wax strip applied - and removed! They have to be over-18, but the event is a family one, with food, a raffle and other attractions.

Daniel himself plans to attend.

Carla says the Golf Inn has pledged a £100 donation.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy muscle fibres break down and are replaced by fibrous and or fatty tissue causing the muscle to gradually weaken.

The condition only affects boys.
