NHS TAYSIDE’S Endowment Advisory Group has approved £27,000 funding for an innovative cleaning pod system for all of NHS Tayside’s 225 hospital wheelchairs.
The wheelchair cleaning pod has been developed and designed by staff from the Portering Services at Ninewells Hospital and will encourage and simplify the maintenance of wheelchair hygiene.
The pod is simple in design and will be permanently attached to the back of all hospital wheelchairs providing easy access to cleaning materials for portering staff when they are out and about in hospitals.
Each pod holds separate compartments for storing sterile non-latex gloves, anti-bacterial wipes and a waste container for used gloves and wipes.
The pods’ unique concept will allow the cleaning of patient and porter contact surfaces of every wheelchair between each use, no matter where the chair is.
Rod Edgcumbe, portering services manager at Ninewells Hospital, said, “We are delighted that funding for the cleaning pod has been approved by the Endowments Advisory Group.
“We hope to have some pods fitted to chairs in the next couple of months.”
