Legion roof to be fixed

The leaking roof of the Royal British Legion Scotland clubhouse in Montrose is finally being repaired.

In February, the branch reported that costly repairs to the flat roof of their premises on Wellington Street could leave them bankrupt, but now the work is being carried out by Southesk Roofing Services.

The branch estimated the cost of the repairs could be up to £10,000, however, the cost of the contract is unknown at this stage.

Ian Robb, branch official, said: “Hopefully this will resolve the faults that have been such a headache over the winter months.”

At the weekend, the branch had an Easter function which raised more than £300, as well as coffee morning on March 22, which raised £840, for the roof repairs.

Mr Robb continued: “Following a very active month of March, with activities that have produced much well accepted support, the branch is feeling a lift.”

Concerns had also been growing about dwindling membership numbers, but the branch has reported an increase of five new members this month on top of the four that joined last month.

Mr Robb said: “They are greatly welcomed but we would like to see more.

“There is no use saying negative things about the club if you’re not a member, the only way to improve performance is from within.”

He added: “Attendance at the Saturday night dances has seen an upturn, and hopefully this will continue.”

However, reports from the bingo nights show a slight drop in Sunday attendances, but Mr Robb said this is compensated for by an increase on Tuesdays.

In March David Kennedy, the club’s secretary, announced he was stepping down due to health problems.

Mr Robb said: “A piece of good news was received that the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund have come forward with an electric chair for David Kennedy, which will make him more mobile. Thanks for such quick action is felt by the RBLS branch.”

The Branch Colour will be on parade at the ANZAC Day commemoration at the Western Cemetery in Arbroath on Sunday (April 27).

All those interested in taking part are asked to assemble at the cemetery for 11.15 a.m. for the start of the service at 11.30 a.m.

Mr Robb said: “We are hopeful that a standard bearer will be able to carry our Branch Colour on this occasion.”

Any groups or charities who would like a stall at the branch’s Summer Fete at the Montrose Cricket Ground on July 19, should contact Avril Jones on 01674 677702.

A standard stall is £10.
