montrose army cadets have come out on top in a recent competition which pitted their skills against those of others in the area.

The team of 15 from the Montrose Royal Artillery Troop excelled overall in the A Company military skills competition, which was held recently at the Buddon training area near Carnoustie.

Open to all eight troops and platoons in the A Company area, which covers Angus and Dundee, the competition tested a wide range of military skills including fieldcraft and camouflage, involving team members moving over a large area with limited cover to approach and take an enemy position without being seen, which Montrose also won.

Other subjects tested were first aid, in which three “casualties” from a simulated road traffic collision were treated, navigation which saw them have to find their way around the training area within a set time limit, command tasks, physical activity, shooting and drill and turnout.

The winning team consisted of Staff Sergeant Laura Balneaves, Sergeant Iain Graham, Bombardier Ruaridh Rankin, Lance Bombardiers Robbie McDonald, Cloe Dewar, Chris Menmuir and Nathan Woods and Cadets Morgan Woods, Dominic Coull, Scott McBain, Alanna Simpson, Tanela Sieunarine, Ashley Thornton, Michael Stewart and Zac Robson.
