A TEAM of hairdressers from Montrose has gained second place in the grand final of one of the country’s top hair-dressing competitions.

Cloud 9, based on the West Port in Arbroath, had already won the north of England and Scotland section of the NYC Redken Hair Awards 2011 in the Colour Genius category.

The team, with salon owner Bekki Smith-Dutton, travelled to Brixton Academy with their model, Steph Strachan, who is also from Montrose.

There, they showcased their ‘look’ which included bright copper and red tones.

The Cloud 9 team went head to head with various other salons from around the country.

The event culminated in a catwalk show where Steph had to model her hairstyle along with the clothes the team had picked out for her.

The competition was judged by industry experts including celebrity hairdresser Lee Stafford, and in a tight competition Cloud 9 came second overall.

Bekki explained: “There were seven teams in the final.

“After the catwalk show we got feedback from Lee Stafford who told us it was very close between us and the eventual winner.

“We still had a fantastic time and we are so happy that our salon is now getting the same recognition as ones in places like London.”

After winning the North of England and Scottish section of the competition earlier this year, Bekki said: “We did our research into autumn/winter trends so that is why we decided to go for the copper and red.”

There were some 1,000 people at the Brixton final, which added to the excitement.
