Academy boat ‘Ronald Small’ named
A POIGNANT naming ceremony was held on Thursday for Montrose Academy’s new boat.
The vessel is named after the late rector of the Academy, Ronald Small. The ceremony was performed by his granddaughter, Freya.
The event reflected the support Mr Small gave to implementing a maritime skills course at the Academy, part of the skills for work element of the curriculum for excellence.
The aim is to give the pupils opportunities for personal achievement and provide practical, hands-on learning outwith the classroom.
Four main outcomes are covered: seamanship, the maritime environment, employability skills and careers in the industry, as well as health and safety.
Teacher Richard Bandeen said: “We thank Angus Council’s education department for their support, and the generosity of local companies which enabled us to purchase the boat, which will further enhance the work done as part of the Maritime Skills Course.”
Companies supporting the purchase include Montrose Port Authority, Montrose Marine Services, Mainstream Renewable Power, Safety Hub, Account Tax, Whyte Cargo Handlers and Crane Hire, Repsol Nuevas Energias UK and Montrose Rope and Sail.
Delivery of the course has been supported by Montrose Lifeboat, HM Coastguard and Tayside Fire and Rescue.
