Campaign sees fall in abuse figures

A REDUCTION in the number of incidents over the Christmas and new year period was recorded by Tayside Police during its annual operation to tackle domestic abuse.

Operation Lynchpin ran from December 21 until January 2, 2013 and during that time 256 domestic incidents were recorded compared to 319 over the same period last year.

Now in its fifth year, the operation is an additional resource the force has put in place to tackle domestic abuse during the festive period, focusing on the perpetrators of domestic abuse as well as making sure that the right support is provided to victims.

The huge impact domestic abuse can have on its victims can be physical, emotional or financial, or very often a combination of all three, and can have irreversible consequences.

Since the launch, dedicated Operation Lynchpin officers have been involved in a number of high risk cases resulting in arrests and additional charges being brought. A day of action was carried out on Friday, December 21 when domestic abusers were visited and bail/warrant checks carried out to coincide with the Strathclyde Police Campaign Against Violence Day.

Acting Detective Inspector David Rankine said : “Tayside Police welcomes the reduction in incidents but I would also like to remind everyone that domestic abuse happens 365 days a year and that all officers are committed to addressing this issue and to supporting the victims and their families throughout the year. The police will continue to look to deal robustly with anyone committing offences.”

Anyone who is a victim of Domestic Abuse or has any information regarding incidents should call Tayside Police on 0300 111 2222, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111. Female and male victims can also contact the 24-hour Scottish Domestic Abuse Helpline on 0800 027 1234 (24 hours) to access support or for referrals to local support providers. For the perpetrators of domestic abuse, there is also a confidential service offered by the Respect Helpline 0808 802 4040.
