Check before travelling by train

Train operator East Coast is advising passengers to check before travel tomorrow (Friday, January 18) as heavy snow is forecast across many areas of Britain.

East Coast is working closely with Network Rail to prepare stations, trains and infrastructure as weather forecasters predict a band of heavy snow will cross the country from west to east tomorrow afternoon and evening.

East Coast is advising customers who intend to travel tomorrow and over the weekend to check before setting out, via its website, www.eastcoast.co.uk, by following ’@eastcoastuk’ on Twitter or by calling National Rail Enquiries on 08457 484950.

In addition, East Coast is:

• Lifting ticket restrictions for East Coast services tomorrow for all journeys on its trains which arrive in, or depart from, London King’s Cross after 10.00

• Encouraging customers wherever possible to travel before 6 p.m. tomorrow, as heavier snowfalls are predicted after that time.

An East Coast spokesman said: “We are constantly monitoring predicted weather conditions along our route, and the latest information we have is that heavier snowfalls are expected between Peterborough and the North East tomorrow afternoon and evening.

“Our people are working hard to prepare our trains and stations as well as we can. Additional engineering teams will be based at key points on our route to keep trains moving, while Network Rail have snowploughs ready to keep tracks clear.

“Our advice to customers is, please check for the latest information before setting out, and allow extra time to reach stations as road conditions are expected to deteriorate through the day.”

Passengers are also being advised to wear warm clothing, to ensure mobile ‘phones are fully charged and to carry a hot drink with them in case of unforeseeable delays.

Short notice changes to services are expected to occur, and these may also affect seat reservations on specific trains.

Updated train service information is available via the operator’s website, www.eastcoast.co.uk, by following ‘@eastcoastuk’ on Twitter, or by calling National Rail Enquiries on 08457 484950.
