ChildLine seeks volunteers
ChildLine is asking volunteers in Angus and Dundee to go back to the classroom to help deliver an exciting new schools service to young people.
The children’s charity has launched a new service for primary age children and needs volunteers to deliver group presentations and workshops in schools across the region.
The ChildLine Schools Service is aimed at primary-aged children, particularly focusing on seven to 11 year olds, and aims to help them understand what abuse is, how to protect themselves and how to seek help if they need it – including through ChildLine.
Working in partnership with the local authority, the service will be delivered to primary six and seven pupils.
Kate Gair, area coordinator for the Schools Service in Angus and Dundee, said: “Volunteers are vital to the success of this new ChildLine service. This is a great opportunity for people to do something to help protect and educate children.
“Research tells us that child abuse can remain hidden for many years with children suffering in silence and other children continuing to be at risk from perpetrators. Many children fail to recognise their experience as abusive and often do not know where they can go for help.
“We believe that teaching children about how to recognise abuse and where to get help will be easiest in a school setting and we need members of the local community to help us do so.”
Volunteers are central to the delivery of this exciting new service. There are two stages to the service which will give volunteers the opportunity to work directly with groups of children. The first stage is a group presentation that provides definitions of abuse, places to go for help and an introduction to ChildLine. The second stage is an interactive classroom-based workshop where the messages are reinforced and skills are developed.
Volunteers must be 16 or over and ChildLine will provide all the relevant training and support required for the role. The children’s charity is looking for volunteers who can communicate and engage with children and are confident to deliver presentations in schools. Volunteers will ideally be people who live near to the schools they visit.
Kate continued: “Volunteers will work in pairs and will be given regular support, guidance and training by ChildLine to ensure they’re able to deliver the assemblies and workshops effectively. You will need to be available to volunteer for part of the day during usual schools hours (between 9am and 3pm) and must be able to commit to ChildLine for one academic year or equivalent.”
