FORMER Montrose janitor Cliff McKay is flying high with success after achieving a life-long ambition and making his first solo flight.

Mr McKay, currently janitor at Brechin High School, took to the skies by himself just before Christmas in the next step towards the attainment of his pilot’s licence.

He said: “I started flying in September 2012 and after 30 hours, my instructor, John Strachan from the Scottish Microlight Flight Centre in Perth, had the confidence to let me fly solo.

“I still have a few more exams to pass and I need to increase me solo hours and undertake two cross-country flights before acquiring my full pilots licence, but I’ll get there.”

Raised and educated in southern Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, Mr McKay and his family moved to South Africa where he spent most of his working life in agriculture and forestry. Since moving to Brechin, Mr McKay worked at Southesk and Ferryden primary schools before relocating to Brechin High School.

He now hopes that by sharing his plans to achieve a life-long dream, he will inspire and encourage others, especially the children he encounters through his work, to do the same.

He added: “ My philosophy in life is that if you have the desire to do something, the belief that its achievable and the determination to see it through, you can achieve and succeed. It’s better to fail having tried than not to have tried at all.”
