Commuting disrupted by Friday’s floods

IT WAS the turn of Montrose and the rest of Angus to suffer from torrential rain and flooding on Friday.
The town woke up to a downpour that had been going on for the entire night, and it soon became clear that there were restrictions on normal movement in the area.
During the morning the road into Ferryden from the A92 became flooded, with water high on the pavement as well as the carriageway. Only the bravest souls attempted to get through, and access via the road past the school became the norm. By afternoon, the road was officially closed from the A92.
Water was pouring off fields and down the side of the viaduct that carries the main north railway line over the A92. In addition to water, there was a considerable flow of earth and stones.
Then as the afternoon progressed the Montrose to Forfar road was closed between the town and Kinnell Crossroads on the A933. This road had been perfectly passable in the morning, although there were signs of water building up as it. It was open again by teatime, but required to be treated with respect.
The A937 between Laurencekirk and Montrose was closed by police during the course of the morning.
However, it did appear that areas which had flooded during the last downpour of near-Biblical proportions had enjoyed real benefit from the work that had been done on them. The area around the Rossie Braes Garden Centre appeared almost unscathed, at least when our reporter passed.
Western Road North, a low-lying problem site in previous years, had no lying water, and although Rosehill was better than some previous occasions, traffic was splashing through fairly deep stuff in some places.
Tayside Fire and Rescue reported no call-outs until around 11am, when one unit attended Gallery House where water had entered the cellar.
By Saturday morning, things had largely returned to normal.
