Deadline looms for school awards

PEOPLE in Angus are being urged to enter their local schools, nurseries or individuals into this year’s Scottish Education Awards 2013 before this month’s closing date for entries.

The awards, which celebrate the achievements of schools and teachers across Scotland, have attracted hundreds of nominations so far but many more schools and individuals are worthy of acknowledgment.

Councillor Sheena Welsh, Angus Council’s education spokeswoman, said that the county’s education stars deserve to be recognised for their efforts.

She said: “We are all very proud of the work that goes on in our schools and, as the deadline for entries approaches, I would encourage local people to come forward and nominate their education stars for an accolade at the Scottish Education Awards 2013.”

Started in 2001 by the Scottish Government, the Scottish Education Awards are open to all publicly funded schools including secondary, primary, nursery and special schools. There are also categories to recognise and reward the dedication of teachers, head-teachers and support staff across the country.

Nominations are currently being invited from across all 17 categories including Teacher of the Year, Global Citizenship, Literacy and Numeracy across Learning, Enterprise and Employability Across Learning for both primary and secondary schools, Sustainable Schools and Health & Well-being.

After the February 22 deadline, a specially selected panel of judges will select three finalists in every category and the finalists will be invited to attend an awards ceremony on Monday, June 10, 2013.

Further information, and nomination forms, are available on the awards’ website at www.scottisheducationawards.org.uk.
