High Street contracts out to tender

THE FIRST phase of Montrose High Street’s regeneration scheme should be complete by next year’s tourist season, a local councillor said this week.

Tenders for the provision of new street furniture are currently being prepared by Angus Council and the High Street Regeneration Group hopes to see installation carried our early next year. Councillor David May said the decision to put the work out to tender was taken recently after a meeting with council officers.

He said: “We now have an agreement about the seating and bins and exactly what style they should be. It’s a matter now of putting the bins, seats and planters out to tender.”

The scheme’s first phase is to provide new seating, litter bins, planters, information boards and the re-siting of the old mermaid lamp standards in a new “corporate colour” for the town while the second phase is the addition of planters and information boards. Phase three includes the replacement of the railings outside Montrose Library.

The street furniture’s new colour scheme - maroon - was chosen during the consultation phase launched by the regeneration group in January which received a positive response from Montrosians of all ages.

Mr May added: “Everything will be the same colour, including the mermaid lamps, which will be maroon as chosen by the public during the consultation phase and we’re hoping it will be in place before the tourist season next year.”

Funding for the scheme has been helped by a council grant of £40,000, which was approved in March, as well as £10,000 from the authority’s £80,000 ward-based funding pot.
