MONTROSE Burns Society delighted the pupils of Inverkeilor Primary School by presenting the school with a cheque for £50 before its recent Burns Supper.

Declan Airns, primary two, accepted the cheque from Mr Richard Stark, representing the Society.

Headteacher Mrs Linda Cartlidge said it was a lovely surprise and the money would be used to contribute towards buying a quaich.

The names of the winners of the school Scottish poetry competition will be engraved on the plinth of the new trophy.

The Burns celebrations began with the nursery and P1/2 class combining to recite poems and sing Scottish songs to their parents.

Violinists James Shellard and Katie Robertson played Scottish tunes and the pipes were played by Lewis Smith.

This was followed by parents joining in a ceilidh and refreshments.

There was a traditional Burns lunch with the haggis piped in by Lewis Smith and addressed by P7 pupil, Drew Rogers.

The Selkirk Grace was said by Frederick Needle.

Senior citizens joined in the afternoon celebrations. They thoroughly enjoyed the violinists, singing, pipes and recitations which were of a high standard.

The afternoon finished with children, staff and visitors taking part in the dancing.

The children had learned a variety of Scottish poems and had been awarded certificates.

Mrs Cartlidge added that special thanks must also go to Mr Ian Ballantyne, who helped with the judging.
