Locals ladies triumph in golf re-enactment

THE LADIES from Montrose won Sunday’s re-enactment of a fixture which used to take place regularly in the late 19th century, between a local side and a ladies’ team from Aberdeen.

Kerry Humphries, director of sponsors Account Tax Limited, presented the trophy to the winning Montrose ladies.

The visitors from Aberdeen were individually given a copy of the book by Bill Coull, ‘Golf in Montrose’, the history of the fifth oldest course in the world.

Alan Crow, chairman of Montrose Golf Links, commented: “This match has been organised by Lynn Coull of the 450 Committee as part of the year of celebrations marking 450 years of golf in Montrose.

“We are very grateful to Account Tax Limited for their generous cheque of £400 towards this and other events in this special year for our golf course.”

The Montrose Ladies would take a train to Aberdeen to play the match, and a week later the Aberdeen Ladies would do the journey in reverse for the second leg of the challenge.

Aberdeen Ladies’ Club still exists, but although the Montrose Ladies’ clubhouse is still standing the club itself has folded, so the town was represented by four members of each of the three clubs in the town.
