Log boat find explained

In AUGUST, 2001, an ancient log boat was discovered, mostly covered in mud and silt, on the south bank of the Tay at Carpow near Abernethy.

It was carbon-dated to about 1000BC and a long process began to assess its condition and to bring it fully into the light of day for the first time in three millennia.

It turned out to be the best preserved log boat so far discovered in Scotland.

Study of the construction of the boat gave many insights into the way it had been made, and this led to the building of a replica on Loch Tay, thus bringing a prehistoric vessel to life once more.

David Strachan is an archaeologist specialising in inter-tidal archaeology.

He has worked with Perth and Kinross Heritage Trust since 2000, and is now manager. He was closely involved in the excavation and preservation of the log boat, which can now be seen at Perth Museum.

He will give an illustrated talk entitled ‘Carpow – a late Bronze-Age Boat brought to life’ at a meeting of Montrose Natural History and Antiquarian Society.

The meeting will be held in Montrose Museum on Tuesday, January 8, at 7.30 p.m., doors open at 7 p.m. All are welcome.
