Montrose is no crime hotspot - official!

SERGEANT Hamish Gray told Montrose Community Council on Thursday that this has been the quietest-ever Christmas/New Year locally for crime.

He paid tribute to the work done by officers in the run-up to the festive season, including focused patrols and putting cards through doors of houses that had an empty look.

Vandalism and under-age drinking were both down.

Sergeant Gray paid tribute to Community Officers Tracy Brown and Ally Gray for their initiative at Borrowfield, providing activities for youngsters, and also to youth clubs in general.

Constable Brown said that shops with Pay Point facilities had been spoken to about a number of scams currently operating, often targeted at vulnerable people.

She said that these shops had been asked to contact police if they felt there was anything suspicious about a transaction, for example, if an elderly person was accompanied by a stranger.

Thefts of diesel fuel in the rural area around Montrose are down, but there is still a problem in the area between Forfar and Dundee.

He said the ‘Smartwater’ system of adding a unique radioactive code to items with potential theft value had been a great success. Police can scan recovered goods and instantly tell who owns them.
