Montrose teen Sheryl Whyte is starring as Cosette in The Limelight Theatres production of Les Mis�rables in Arbroath this week

Talented teen Sheryl Whyte has landed a leading role in a production of ‘Les Misérables’ showing in Arbroath this week.

The 15-year-old from Montrose is “delighted and privileged” to have been successful in her audition for the part of Cosette in The Limelight Theatre company’s production showing until Saturday (February 22) at The Webster Memorial Theatre.

‘Les Mis’ is based on a French historical novel by Victor Hugo. Set in 1800s France, it follows the lives several characters, focusing on the struggles of ex-convict Jean Valjean and his redemption.

After her mother Fantine dies, Cosette is rescued by Valjean, who raises her as if she were his own family. She grows up in a convent school into a young beauty.

Sheryl said: “This is a huge opportunity for me to perform in ‘Les Misérables’ and I am so excited to have been selected as Cosette in such a wonderful production.

“I’ve been rehearsing twice weekly for the last three months and am looking forward to performing in the show along with my fellow cast members.”

Sheryl has been involved with The Limelight Company for the past 18 months and has been cast in two of there past productions as Munkustrap in ‘Cats’ and as Widow Corney in ‘Oliver’.

She is applying to further her career in acting and performance at Dundee College this coming year.

Sheryl’s great grandmother was Betsy Whyte author of ‘Yellow on the Broom’.

She said: “Music has been in my family for the past three generations and I am keen to continue in my family tradition of performing and singing professionally on stage.”

Sheryl is a fourth year pupil at Montrose Academy and last year won the Margaret Brown Junior Singing Prize for her rendition of ‘Somewhere over the Rainbow’ and Limelight’s showstopper award for her role in Oliver.

Sheryl also participated in last year’s youth festival of Mo Fest with her elder brother, John Finnie, on the live stage in the centre of Montrose.
