MSP demands written constitution

Local MSP Nigel Don believes an Independent Scotland should have a written constitution containing the core values of a free and forward thinking modern Scottish society. Mr Don echoed the First Minister’s calls that a Scottish constitution should enshrine the rights of Scottish citizens to a home and free education for all.

Mr Don also supports a constitutional ban on the possession of nuclear weapons.

He said: “Every country in Europe apart from the United Kingdom has a written constitution to protect its citizens from changing governments. Any such document cannot be driven by any one political party and it must involve the Scottish people to determine the form of government best suited to their needs. A Scottish constitution will reflect our society’s values of fairness and equity and should harness the inspiration and enthusiasm of the Scottish people.

“A modern written constitution will safeguard the values of Scotland and with the powers of independence enable Scotland take its place on the global stage creating a fairer and prosperous nation.”

First Minister Alex Salmond said: “An independent Scotland will be a modern democracy and a modern democracy should have a written constitution.”
