Tayside Fire and Rescue, with Tayside Police, are running a junior fire safety course for the P7 Southesk Primary School transitional group.

The Young Fire Fighters’ Programme is dedicated to educating children between 12 and 17, on safety awareness around the hazards and risks associated with it

The programme runs over three weeks and covers hose handling, equipment familiarisation, breathing apparatus, smoke house, fire extinguishers and fire safety at home. All subjects are covered through theory and practical. Training takes place at Montrose Fire station where local firefighters teach the children how to use the different types of extinguishers and get them involved in role playing games to further strengthen the lessons.

Montrose Community Officer PC Ally Hutchison and Tayside Fire and Rescue Watch Manager Mike Cassie both took part and were impressed with the enthusiasm and support from the young trainees.

The successful joint initiative has seen Tayside Fire and Rescue and Tayside Police working closely with partners in the community.

Watch manager Mike Cassie added: “Anyone interested in home fire safety can arrange to have a free visit to your home carried out by local firefighters. To express an interest call 03001239998.”
