Women’s Land Army urged to come forward for badge

FORMER members of the armed forces and Women’s Land Army are being encouraged to apply for official badges recognising their contribution during the Second World War.

The first veterans’ badge was issued in May 2004 to Lord Healy, himself a veteran of the Battle for Monte Cassino, which prompted the roll-out of the badge to the generation who served in the war. Since then eligibility to apply for the badge has been extended in phases and it is now open to all veterans who enlisted in HM Armed Forces between September 3, 1945, and December 31, 1984.

The badge is an enamelled, engraved lapel badge featuring the words ‘HM Armed Forces – Veteran’, which encompasses the Tri-Service, Anchor, Crossed Swords and Eagle motif.

The Women’s Land Army and Timber Corp badge is the first official recognition of the contribution made to the war effort by members of those services. Known affectionately as ‘Land Girls’ and ‘Lumber Jills’, they worked tirelessly to supply the nation with food and timber.

Nanette Milne, Scottish Conservative MSP for the North East, urged everyone eligible to make sure they receive the recognition they deserve.

She said: “For generations our armed forces have served our country across the world in many roles from war fighting, peacekeeping and reconstruction to home defence. In so doing they have defended our country, our way of life and our cherished values. A large number of our veterans are young and active and now use the skills, the discipline and the leadership they learned in the armed forces to benefit their civilian employers and the wider community.”
