Man in court after High Street incident

A 35-YEAR-OLD local man appeared at Arbroath Sheriff Court on Monday in connection with an alleged serious assault in the town last week.

Thomas Docherty, of Montrose, appeared in private and on petition charged with assault to severe injury, permanent impairment and permanent disfigurement.

Emergency services were called to a disturbance at a flat above Steeple Jack’s on the High Street shortly after 2am on Friday to find a 39-year-old man with serious injuries to his head, hands and arms.

He was rushed to Ninewells Hospital for treatment where it was established his injuries were not life-threatening.

The incident sparked intense police activity around the flat and its entrance close, which were cordoned off for much of Friday to allow a forensic examination to be carried out.

A second property in the town was also searched as part of the police inquiry.

Appearing from custody, Docherty made no plea or declaration and was committed for further examination and remanded in custody.
