A pair of medical professionals from NHS Tayside have been awarded MBEs for their services to healthcare.

NHS Tayside Advanced Nurse Practitioner June Finnie and Accident and Emergency consultant Dr Bill Morrison received the awards in The Queen’s Birthday Honours.

June specialises in neurosurgery care in ward 23b at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee. She began her career 30 years ago and has worked in the speciality of neurosurgery for approximately 25 years.

After taking on her role with NHS Tayside 11 years ago, June graduated with an Advanced Nurse Practitioner (Neurosurgery) Masters from the University of Dundee last year.

June said: “The award has come as a complete surprise. I’m not sure who put me forward for this honour but I would like to pass on my heartfelt thanks.

“I, along with the team I work with, strive to provide the best safe and effective care for the patients that come to our department and we work together to support our nursing and medical colleagues.

“It is definitely not just me, I am just part of a whole team working together. I am completely overwhelmed to receive this award.”

After graduating from Aberdeen University in 1980, Dr Bill Morrison came to NHS Tayside as the first Consultant in Emergency Medicine in 1993. He was instrumental in developing the success of the accident and emergency department in Tayside and has been involved in the development of the speciality of emergency medicine, both in Scotland and internationally.

Dr Morrison said: “This award is as a result of a team effort. This is more true in my case than in most - I have been extremely fortunate to have had a wonderful team of consultant colleagues and nurses, and any success our service has had is entirely due to them.

“I think this, in addition to the recent announcement that Ninewells will be one of four Scottish Trauma Centres, serves to cement our position at the forefront of acute care in the UK.”

June and Bill will receive their awards at an official ceremony later this year.

NHS Tayside Chairman Professor John Connell said: “On behalf of NHS Tayside, I would like to extend my warmest congratulations to June and Bill on these well-deserved awards.

“I thank them for their hard work and dedication to NHS Tayside and the patients they care for.”
