Montrose will be hosting its very own Commonwealth Games for youngsters in the town.

All Primary four to seven pupils in the burgh will be taking part in the Montrose Mini Commonwealth Games this Friday (June 6).

It will be held at the sports field behind Montrose Sports Centre from 10 a.m. to 12 noon.

The event has been organised by Jamie McLaren, Active Schools coordinator for Montrose.

He said: “We are looking to promote the up coming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow by holding a multi-sport event involving many of the sports the children will see in Glasgow.

“It will mimic the real games with an opening and closing ceremony, as well as pupils competing for gold, silver and bronze medals.

“It is hoped the mini games will engage the children with the main event, as well as encourage them to continue to participate in local school and community sport.

“It may even inspire a future star for Scotland.”

Pupils will compete in athletics track and field events,a rugby sevens tournament and laser clay pigeon shooting.

The schools have selected a second Commonwealth country to research and cheer on during the Glasgow games and will compete under the banner of their second country in the mini games.

Jamie added: “We will also have musicians from Montrose Academy and the primary schools providing music, as well as radio North Angus.

“So please come down and cheer on our sports stars of the future.”
