THE QUESTION of ambulance staff attending call-outs during meal breaks was raised by Angus North and Mearns SNP MSP Nigel Don during First Minister’s questions in the Scottish Parliament on Thursday.
Mr Don acknowledged the sensitive nature of negotiations and expressed his wish that the issue be resolved quickly.
The First Minister confirmed that talks were still continuing between the Scottish Ambulance Service and unions, with the aim of reaching a mutually agreeable position in the near future.
Afterwards, Mr Don said: “It is encouraging that negotiations are being carried out constructively between the Scottish Government and Unions over procedures to compensate ambulance crews for attending call-outs during meal breaks.
“Although an agreement has yet to be reached it is reassuring that interim arrangements are in place to ensure crews are available for emergency calls during rest breaks.
“Ensuring coverage for emergency call-outs is vital especially to rural communities in Angus and the Mearns where ambulance crews are more spread out, and I hope a swift and successful outcome to the negotiations is forthcoming, which provides a sustainable solution to this issue.”
