An online petition to protect Montrose from coastal erosion has had the backing of a North East MSP.

Montrosian Douglas Smith set up the petition entitled ‘Save Montrose from the waves’.

It is aimed at Nicola Sturgeon with a target number of signatures set at 1000, after which it will be sent to the First Minister.

Liam Kerr, Scottish Conservative MSP for the North East Region, has signed the petition.

He said: “I was more than happy to sign this petition and I hope that by doing so I can help raise awareness of this important local issue.

“There are legitimate concerns locally about the impact of gradual coastal erosion in Montrose over the years.

“I think there needs to be an open discussion about any future investment in man-made barriers and how they compliment the natural dune system.

“It is only right that the local community gets involved with this and has a say in how Angus Council proceeds in future.”

An Angus Council spokesman previously said the natural coastal defence afforded by dune and beach systems is “considered to be the best long term plan for managing our coastline”.
