LOCAL charity volunteer Ethel Norrie (pictured) was recognised for more than 40 years’ service Oxfam at a recent awards night.

A total of 358 years of volunteering were represented at the ceremony in the George Hotel last Thursday when long-service awards and badges were presented to the charity’s loyal group of helpers.

Volunteers ranged from some who have been with Oxfam for less than a year to Mrs Norrie, who has volunteered for 41 years, and 93-year-old Cathy Smith.

Many of the group, mostly women, have been volunteers before and since retiring from full-time work and who looked for a way to provide a service to others.

Although Oxfam has managed to attract some male volunteers, the team is mainly of women but the charity still actively looks for help, under the heading Time Well Spent.

Further information about volunteering opportunities is available from James Fraser at the Oxfam shop in Orange Lane.
