THE FUTURE of a long-established Montrose parent and toddler group could be in doubt unless it can attract new members.

Lochside Parent and Toddler group has been held in Lochside School’s community lounge for years but is facing complete closure due to a declining membership.

New member Jennifer Garnes said the group is resisting pulling the plug as too many similar groups have already been forced to close down.

She said: “We really don’t want that to happen as there have been so many facilities in the town that have closed already and the children need the social interaction.

“Quite a few of us started coming here after the Tuesday group which met at the health centre failed and we feel that if this goes it will be another facility lost for young mums and children.

“It just seems to be this year, since Christmas, that numbers seem to have declined.”

Mrs Garnes added that the social contact is healthy for parents as well as children and that the group, which caters for children from birth to three years and open all parents in the town, is keen to encourage more participation.

She said: “We’re very inclusive and have nothing to do with Lochside’s catchment area. Everyone is welcome to attend and we need about 10 more members to maintain a healthy membership level.”

The group meets every Monday during term time between 1.30 and 3pm.
