Angus MP Mike Weir and SNP colleagues voted against the Public Sector Pensions Bill at Westminster.
Labour abstained and it was passed by a large majority. Mr Weir said the coalition’s plans for public sector pensions without proper consultation caused uncertainty and insecurity amongst Scotland’s public sector.
“These punitive reforms are about the UK Government’s deficit reduction plans, and have nothing to do with sustainable pensions. The need for affordable, sustainable and fair public sector pensions is of critical importance, which is why the short-term cash grab by the UK Government is so concerning.
“These plans will have a detrimental effect on the economy of Angus, where around one-third of employed people are in the public sector.
“The UK Government continues to have the power to meddle and influence issues which are central to Scotland’s public sector workers, which should be for the Scottish Government to decide.”
