The Montrose branch of the SNP held its AGM recently when convener Kitty Ritchie reported a successful year with two candidates elected in the 2012 council elections, Bill Duff and Paul Valentine.

The branch is now fully engaged with the ‘Yes Scotland’ campaign for the 2014 independence referendum and it was reported that branch membership has risen by 20 per cent in the past year. Both Nigel Don MSP and Mike Weir MP gave reports from their respective parliaments. Mr Weir observed that the ‘No’ side’s arguments were unravelling on a daily basis.

SNP MPs questioning the thousands of treaties that an independent Scotland might have to renegotiate were being told about treaties with the Independent State of Texas and with the Austro-Hungarian Empire! The SNP has led a very good debate on the welfare reforms and the Bedroom Tax.

Mr Don commented on the forthcoming white paper on the Referendum and his work on the recent flooding and Laurencekirk junction issues in his constituency. The office-bearers elected at the meeting were: convener - Kitty Ritchie, vice-convener - Sandy West, secretary - Councillor Bill Duff, treasurer - Councillor Paul Valentine and organiser Mark McDonald.
