The chief executive of Montrose Port Authority John Paterson has been crowned 2013’s Angus Ambassador of the Year.
The judges, made up of Angus industry leaders, recognised Mr Paterson’s strong leadership and commercial dynamism, which led to the transformation and investment of a once declining port into a successful centre for international trade, and distribution throughout Scotland and northern England.
They were impressed by Mr Paterson’s drive to progress an £8 million investment project with Government support to rebuild two new deep water berths on the South Quay that opened early in 2010, which resulted in a doubling of the number of oil and gas support vessels using Montrose Port in recent years.
This investment and others under his leadership has resulted in an increase of annual tonnages traded through the port from 1.4 million tonnes in 2007 to more than two million tonnes in 2012. The importance of these developments was emphasised when the first major shipments of wind turbine components were landed and offloaded at Montrose by RES and Gamesa on their way to wind farms in Aberdeenshire in February this year.
Jim Raeper, technical manager of Montrose Port Authority, said: “An aspect of John’s leadership style which stands out is his positive mental attitude when facing the many challenges at the port. Whenever he goes into business discussions or negotiations, he is always looking to emerge with a ‘win-win’ outcome.”
Mr Paterson also supports local initiatives in Montrose, such as the SVQ skills for work in Maritime Skills with Montrose Academy, and a south Montrose Regeneration masterplan to improve the roads and infrastructure on the north side of the port.
He received the award from sponsors Forster Energy Solutions, at the awards ceremony dinner on in November at the Carnoustie Golf Hotel. The awards, presented by Angus Ahead and sponsored by local companies were hosted by Andrea Brymer, of STV’s North Tonight.
John Forster, director of Forster Energy Solutions and ambassador awards’ judge said: “This is the first year we’ve sponsored the Angus Ambassador of the Year award and it’s been a privileged experience to be involved from the start through the judging process then at the awards ceremony itself. All the finalists were outstanding and I’m sure a lot of people are very proud of Angus after hearing about them. I certainly am.”
