Montrose’s new swimming pool is now 80 per cent complete and set to open in October, on target and on budget Angus Council has said.
Construction on the £9 million combined swimming and sports centre began last year and, once complete, the facility will feature a main six-lane pool, a 100-seat viewing gallery and a studio pool with a moving floor.
Leisure services spokeswoman Councillor Jeanette Gaul said: “The new complex, which brings the swimming pool and sports centre together at Marine Avenue, is going to be a fantastic addition to the facilities available for residents and visitors in Montrose.
“While we’ve managed to maintain leisure activities in other locations during the construction, and of course the existing pool is still open, everyone is now counting the days until the new swimming and sports centre opens in October.”
The complex, next to Montrose Academy, will also feature a new health suite with a sauna, steam room and relaxation area, multi-purpose rooms for meetings and training and a café. Both pools will accommodate swimming tuition at all levels, competitive swimming and training, water polo and play activities.
Although the current pool is still open, alternative accommodation had to be found for sports centre activities when the building closed and both Montrose Academy and the town hall were refurbished to prepare them as venues.
The school benefited from improvements to flooring, changing rooms and showers, lighting and security and installation of a limited gym while renovations to the town hall included toilets and changing rooms as well as the installation of a shower. The fitness suite was moved to a temporary home in the former Wirren House on Northesk Road.
Mrs Gaul added: “Montrose is a lively and bustling town with many attractions, including a fine museum, a sculpture studio and a world class golf course. So I’m sure that whatever the weather local people and visitors alike will enjoy the facilities on offer.”
