Rafters will be under starter’s orders this Sunday when they take to the waters of the North Esk for the annual Marykirk Raft Race.

With the event under way at noon, the organisers are hoping that the number of entrants will exceed the 17 that competed last year.

The race is expected to take around 30 minutes, with winners passing the finishing line at Marykirk Bridge, but the wider event will continue afterwards with the popular party in the village park.

This year, for just £1 entry, the committee has arranged a wide variety of attractions for the whole family with children’s rides and games, food and produce stalls, beer tent, local bands, a talent show and dance and martial arts demonstrations.

Lego artist and author Warren Elsmore will also show some of his Lego models and sign copies of his new book, ‘Brick City’.

John Wolstencroft, race chairman, said “We always have a great day and the rafters really get into the spirit on some interesting rafts and in very interesting fancy dress. The committee has been busy for several months raising funds to organise the event, so we hope that lots of people will come out to celebrate with us.

“We hope to top the super day we had last year and help us raise a lot of money for local charities.”
