School ethos praised in HMI report

ROSEMOUNT Primary has been given an overall positive report following a recent visit by HM inspectors.

Pupils were noted to be “relaxed and confident” and praised for being able to work well with each other and adults but it was also remarked that the school should be doing more to implement the Curriculum for Excellence and improve self-evaluation for pupils and parents.

In the report issued this week, HM Inspector Ken McAra said that the nursery children were “confident and relaxed” while the primary pupils “succeed in a wide variety of school and community activities because staff plan learning which develops children’s skills for learning, life and work.”

He added: “Children are proud of their nursery and enjoy sharing what they have been learning with parents and visitors.

“The primary school celebrates achievement in a range of ways, including weekly certificates, parent newsletters and at assemblies. Children achieve well in an impressive range of activities including sport and creative arts. Primary teachers know children well and are sensitive and caring to their needs.”

Mr McAra highlighted a strong staff team within the school and said teachers are using the Curriculum for Excellence to plan learning opportunities although they are also “working to develop a more coherent approach to learning, teaching and assessment in line with local authority policy” since there is currently no clear vision and rationale for the curriculum.

He said: “The head teacher has a sound understanding of the school’s strengths and areas in which it needs to improve further, and is supporting and developing the capacity of staff to take on leadership roles.

“Parents appreciate the opportunities they get to give their opinion and this should be extended to give the Parent Council great involvement in improvement planning with the school.

“We are satisfied with the overall quality of provision. We are confident that the school’s self-evaluation processes are leading to improvements and, as a result, we will make no further visits in connection with this inspection.”
