Montrose Sports Centre was closed at the weekend after water containing raw sewage was found seeping through the facility’s ceiling.
The centre on Marine Avenue had to shut its doors on Saturday night and staff worked until midnight to clean up the mess after a pipe burst, causing waste water to drip from the ceiling into the reception area.
The incident began at around 8.30 p.m. on Saturday night at the end of a major swimming gala.
The Review understands that tiles also fell off the ceiling of the swimming pool area.
The facility remained closed throughout Sunday while ‘deep’ cleaning work took place.
The Angus Leisure Facebook page stated that the centre would be closed on Sunday “due to internal maintenance issues”.
An Angus council spokesperson said: “On Saturday night a pipe burst at the leisure centre causing waste water to leak into the ceiling of the reception area.
“Staff immediately contacted a plumber who arrived within 20 minutes to stop the leak and unblock the pipes.
“Our staff remained on site and worked to clean up the mess until midnight.
“The centre remained closed on Sunday while the affected areas were deep cleaned and the plumber carried out remedial work.
“On Monday we erected scaffolding to allow the joiner and electrician to carry out work to the ceiling areas at reception.
“We apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused to users of the centre.”
The sport centre reopened at 4 p.m. on Monday.
